There was a lawsuit filed today in LA Superior Court against Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, Banana Boat, Neutrogena and Bullfrog. Here is the headline from the San Diego Union Tribune.

Slather on some waterproof sunblock and you're ready for a long day at the beach, right?
Hardly, says a consumer lawsuit that alleges sunscreen manufacturers overpromise when it comes to the protection their products provide.
The suit filed yesterday by the San Diego law firm of class-action specialist Bill Lerach and another firm is a compilation of nine earlier complaints against some of the biggest names in the sunscreen industry. They include Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, Banana Boat, Neutrogena and Bullfrog.

The suit, which seeks class-action status in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges these brands incorrectly market many of their products as waterproof “sunblocks” that provide “all-day protection.”

The suit takes direct aim at the FDA as well for not regulating the termonology used by the industry. I really think that this is a suit against the advertising agencies that try to out-promote eachother.

What I do agree with is that sunscreens and sunblocks are the answer for exposed skin only. Cover up is the answer. Applying sun products to lay out in the sun is just plain foolish!

We will see. As they say, Film at 11p

It's about time these people get sued for misleading consumers. I have paid so much money on sunblocks that aren't really broad spectrum and that puts me at risk for skin cancer. Those products make me think I am safe in the sun when I'm not. I'm sure some sunscreen is better than none, but the false claims can harm us and our wallets.
