My husband is getting ready to go on a dive trip to the FL Keys and will be using Solar Rx sunblock for the first time (waterproof sunscreen used to be his protection of choice). Keeping in mind that he'll be in and out of the water all day long, how often should he reapply Solar Rx to insure maximum protection?
Solar Rx is especially designed for vulnerable, exposed skin on the face, neck and hands. We recommend that anyone planning extended outdoor activities take extra measures to cover their skin using protective SPF clothing. There are water shirts and water pants that are very effective in preventing uv damage to the skin. A google search for SPF Clothing will give you lots of options. The Skin Cancer Foundation gives the following guidelines for proper protection "An effective SPF 15 or higher sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours until sunset, even if the label promises 'all-day protection' It should be reapplied immediately after swimming or sweating alot, even if the sunscreen is called 'sweatproof' 'very water-resistant' or 'waterproof' The new FDA regulations prohibit use of the expressions 'waterproof' and 'all day protection' probably because people will improperly assume that one application is enough to protect them. Protective clothing goes a long way to provide all day coverage--then follow the guidelines to protect face, neck and hands--and don't forget the hat and sunglasses after returning to the surface from the dive experience. These are great alternatives to protect the environment as well! Thanks for your question and please check out www.skincancer.org for more information from The Skin Cancer Foundation.
