This is the question I asked myself and my stylist after learning about SLS on the Keys Soap website. My hair had become very dry and brittle and was breaking constantly. My stylist had never heard of SLS. My health food store couldn't recommend a shampoo without it. I began to read labels until I found one that didn't mention anything scary. Four weeks later, I went back to get my haircut and my stylist asked me what in the world I had been putting on my hair because it was in the best condition she had ever seen it. I believe it was the lack of SLS. I don't even use conditioner anymore. Has anyone else gone SLS free with their shampoo? What were the results?

There are actually several companies that offer SLS free shampoos. Most have sample sizes you can try out since you can't smell the different scents online!

Terressentials
(www.terressentials.com)
Aubrey Organics www.aubrey-organics.com

Real Purity Products (www.realpurityproducts.com)

The Natural Alchemist
(www.naturalalchemist.com)
Evan's Garden

As a friendly warning when you are looking at shampoos, don't go by brand. You have to look at every product. Some brands make some of their own products and private label other products from large contract manufacturers. These manufacturers force their customers to use their base formulas for large volume production run. Often you can find one product of a brand that is clean and one that is not.

What this means is that you have to read every labels.

I really recommend going to The Skin Deep Report for the Environmental Working Group and look at each product you are considering or look at their group product rankings for the best products.

OK, I think I am getting angry! Mad

I just looked up SLS on the NIH resource and it is scary what this junk is in and how much of it is in products Eeker Go to http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/household/brands?tbl=chem&id=98 and see what this SLS stuff is in. I am going through my house this afternoon. I think I should call the State Hazmat to come to pick it up. I will be writing to the "Govenator."

I don't want to pour gasoline on this fire, but what the heck. Big Grin

If you go to http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemical.html which is part of the Specialize Information Service of the National Medical Library, you can type in SLS in the search window marked ChemIDplus Lite:. It will bring you to the SLS page. On the left there is a tab that say "Names and Synonyms" you will see that their appears to be over 100 synonyms that are being used for SLS. If you scroll down and read some of the tests and idications, it is very scary. If you want to really ruin your day, plug in the other 11 "Dirty Dozen" chemicals to see their other names.

I think I will post something else about this to not get away from this topic forum.

Confused

I wanted to put this thread back on track because the shampoo issue is a big one. Many people believe that they have facial skin disorders and find that when they stop using and SLS based shampoo that their conditions clear up. Washing your hair with a highly concentrated SLS based shampoo not only can cause scalp disorders, but the run off down the face, neck and back can be a problem.

Here is an image of the EWG's Top 10 best shampoos. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

For this reason, SLS, I ordered Keys, and I was taken back by the consistency... it was TOO watery! But I've noticed since, Keys has added the PUMP factor - which I did in my shower - and it's amazing! Wonderful, and lathers up perfectly. I use castile soap in the bar form to wash my body when I don't have my pump bottle with me. At the gym etc.

The Redi Care is amazing as a conditioner too! Better than the Tortuga for me. The Tortuga was too heavy - the Redi Care is perfect. I also use on my daugheter's bum for diaper rash (best ever!) and on my dog as a flea repellent and conditioner! Love it!
